Plan to Reduce Daily Email Delivered to Faculty and Staff Inboxes

Last summer, Appalachian faculty and staff made the successful move to Google Apps for Education.  The new levels of collaboration between colleagues and faculty with their students using Google mail, calendar, docs and drive has been extraordinary. In order to continue taking advantage of what Google has to offer our campus, we have worked to streamline and reduce the amount of daily email delivered to your inboxes.  Our campus values the sense of community that comes from sharing information about upcoming events, resources and campus announcements, but many feel the volume of email generated to support this communication has grown to an undesirable level.  We are starting everyone with a clean slate with special topic groups. Go to and “opt-in” to the Google Group for the areas where you would like to continue receiving email.  These optional groups include:  The Arts, Athletics, Conferences and Camps, Faculty Announcements, Food Services, Global Engagement, Health Promotion, Research, Staff Announcements and Sustainability.  You can decide to opt-out of any group whenever you wish. For general campus-wide announcements, there will now be a “daily digest” of these news items that will be sent once a day to your email. This will combine the announcements into one email instead of many.   Existing email lists used by the Office of the Chancellor and vice chancellor’s offices for important and timely email including emergencies will remain in use. If you have any questions, please call the IT Support Help Desk at 828-262-6266.
