October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month

Our Shared Responsibility - staysafeonline.orgOctober is National Cyber Security Awareness Month. ITS has several events planned to celebrate and educate faculty, staff and students on how to defend yourself against cyber attacks. Faculty, staff and students are all invited to all of these events.

From rampant cyber-crime, to car hacking, to massive global data dumps, it is clear that cyber security is a topic whose importance only continues to grow. A panel of Appalachian faculty, law enforcement investigators, and IT professionals will discuss and take questions regarding how we can find our way in an ever changing cyber security landscape. What lies ahead and most importantly what can we do about it?

  • Invisible Warfare: Wireless Hacks and Defenses

Wireless security is an often overlooked aspect of personal and organizational cyber security. With wireless connections becoming ubiquitous, many of us have developed WiFi usage habits that don't always reflect an awareness of risks. We'll demonstrate how bad guys use wireless flaws (and our own habits) to go after our data and how we can help defend ourselves and our community from these attacks.
