Fall Semester Technology Update

The first weeks of every new Academic year are always exciting and this year is no exception. As the campus settles into the semester, I would like to share with you some of the projects and initiatives that are underway or coming in the near future in IT.

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month. ITS has several events planned to celebrate and educate faculty, staff and students on how we can better defend ourselves against cyber-attacks.

The Annual Report for the fiscal year 2014-2015 (PDF, 2MB) is now available on our website. Please take a few minutes to review the incredible progress our central and distributed technology teams have made this year.

We are also excited to announce that effective 10/1/2015, the Physical Plant Telecommunications group has begun the process of transitioning into Information Technology Services. This move will allow us to better align resources and prepare for Voice Over IP as telecommunications services continue to merge into network communications.

This year begins the third year of our IT Governance model. We have four governance committees and an IT Security Advisory Council. These governance groups include the Academic and Research Services Technology Portfolio Committee, the Administrative Services Portfolio Committee, the Productivity and Security Services Portfolio Committee and the Web and Mobile Portfolio Committee. The following are some of the projects and identified priorities that these governance groups are shepherding and working on this year:

  • Expanding Banner Workflow and Fortis Imaging
  • Technology Research Services
  • University IT Security Plans
  • Phase II of Voice over IP
  • Information Analytics
  • Digital Measures, Faculty Workload, APortfolio Pilot, Tech4Teaching collaboration with Belk Library and Information Commons
  • Continued expansion and support for Mountaineer Apps powered by Google Apps for Education

Please see the Office of the CIO website at cio.appstate.edu to follow the progress of technology on campus.

Best,
Cathy
